SightSmash vs. SportsEngine for club directors
SportsEngine runs registration and payments for thousands of clubs. Here is where the percentage fees and the tool count add up.
You are running registration through SportsEngine right now, or you were until the fees started adding up. This is for the director who wants to know exactly what changes and what does not.
What SportsEngine is good at
SportsEngine HQ is a real, mature product. As published on discover.sportsengineplay.com/solutions/pricing/in-app on 2026-09-13, the Free plan costs $0 per month and includes payments and invoicing, program listings, team apparel stores, and sponsorship finder tools, with a processing rate of 3.5% plus $2.00 per transaction.
The Premium plan is $69 per month, or $595 per year when paid annually, described on the page as a 10% saving. Premium adds online registration, a team mobile app, schedules and rosters, safety services, websites, and live support with a dedicated onboarding coach. The processing rate drops to 3.25% plus $2.00 on Premium, and the page notes per-applicant fees for background screening and per-trainee fees for abuse prevention screening.
For a club that needs background checks, a public website, and registration handled by one company with a support line, that is a genuinely complete answer. A lot of clubs run their whole business on it and never think twice.
Where it breaks for a director
Look at those processing rates again: 3.5 percent plus $2.00 on the free plan, 3.25 percent plus $2.00 on Premium. Percentage fees scale with the price of what you are selling. A $150 registration costs more in fees than a $15 ticket, even though SportsEngine did the same amount of work either side.
That is fine when parents do not notice. They notice. A family paying to register three kids across a season sees the same percentage taken three times, and eventually someone does the math out loud in the parent group chat.
The other gap is the day-to-day of a match itself. SportsEngine’s page covers registration, payments, websites, and schedules. It does not mention live score tracking for a parent in the stands, and that still lives in a different tool, on a different login, for every family in your club.
What SightSmash does
SightSmash covers schedules and messaging, plus the live and same-day match tracking parents actually open their phone for during a game. Registration and payments are priced below but not open yet, so they are not something to plan a season around today.
The fee structure is flat, not a percentage: $0.50 per ticket, $5 per team entry, $1.50 per individual registration, with any payment processor pass-through shown as its own line, never folded into a number that looks smaller than it is. A $500 registration and a $50 registration cost the club the same $1.50 fee either way.
The Club plan is $949 per season for the whole club, six teams included, with additional teams at $149 per season each. Those are published soft-launch prices, confirmed in a written pilot agreement before anyone pays, and self-serve buying is not open. Free family core tracking, the live and same-day view of your own kid’s match, stays free forever, which is a different promise than “free until you need the feature that matters.”
When SportsEngine is still the right call
If you need background screening, a website, and registration running today, SportsEngine exists right now and has for years. Clubs with real compliance requirements, USA Volleyball SafeSport tracking among them, should not wait on a tool that has not shipped yet to handle something this important.
SportsEngine’s scale is also a fact worth respecting. A company that has processed this much youth sports registration has worked through edge cases a new tool has not seen yet. If your season starts next month, that experience is worth something today, not hypothetically.
Directors switching tools mid-season also take on real risk: exported rosters, parents who have to create new accounts, and a support gap while everyone learns the new interface. None of that is free, and it should factor into when you make a change, not just whether you eventually do.
The honest read is that SightSmash is not trying to out-feature SportsEngine on registration compliance. It is trying to fix the percentage-fee model and the gap between registration and the match itself. If your club is happy with SportsEngine’s fees and just wants better match-day tracking, that is a narrower problem, and it is the one SightSmash solves first.
The number worth checking yourself
Take a club with 120 registered athletes paying $150 each. At 3.25 percent plus $2.00 per transaction, that is roughly $4.88 per registration in fees, close to $585 across the club for the season on Premium’s own published rate.
Run the same 120 registrations through flat fees at $1.50 each and you get $180 for the season. That gap is not a hypothetical. It is arithmetic anyone can run against their own roster and their own registration price.
Where this leaves you
Run that same math against your own club’s actual registration price and roster size. Flat fees will not win every scenario, and you should check the numbers yourself rather than trust either vendor’s framing, ours included.
